A Short Rant On Plagiarism

Plagiarism.
Just seeing the word sets me on edge. Let me say I have had horrible experiences with it.
I have been plagiarized from before—not for one of my blog posts but one of my babies ( which is what I refer to any novel/ short story I write). And here's the reason why: Hours upon hours were spent scribbling down illegible words in the middle of math class, ignoring some of my of homework to jot down important scenes, and staying up late into the many nights so as not to lose my inspiration—thus leaving me tired and drained out the following day—in order to write my novels. My writing is a very important part of who I am. For someone to steal any of it and claim it as their own is beyond soul crushing.
Thus—I do not condone plagiarism. At all. I don’t excuse it. I don’t mark it off as a mistake (because really, 6 stolen blog posts is NOT a mistake). And I most certainly do not give the plagiarist a pat on the back for what they did.
Especially when the plagiarist: tries to cover it up, lies about it, further denies they didn’t do it despite the glaring evidence, and then has to be forced into an apology after finally being caught when the whole situation took place months and months ago. (An apology in which she  mostly is concerned with what the publishers think about her, not her readers)

Not to mention [this] which almost made me cry. [The girl this was sent to is unknown]
In light of recent events I will no longer be participating in the In My Mailbox meme.  Although I'm sure you're already aware, If you’re confused on what’s going on there are some great posts already written on the situation I'm refering to in this post like this one, this one, and this one. And just because I can't leave the world of academia I thought this post on plagiarism was awesome as well.
In other news:
I haven’t received any books this week (which is great! since I have so many that I need to catch up on at the moment) but next week and so on I will be using an alternative to IMM.

Waiting On Wednesday (7)

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

A U R A C L E by Gina Rosati
Release Date: August 7th, 2012
Publisher: Roaring Books Press
Pages: 304 | ISBN: 1596437103

16 year old Anna Rogan has a secret she's only shared with her best friend, Rei; she can astrally project out of her body, allowing her spirit to explore the world and the far reaches of the universe. When there's a fatal accident and her classmate Taylor takes over Anna's body, what was an exhilarating distraction from her repressive home life threatens to become a permanent state. Faced with a future trapped in another dimension, Anna turns to Rei for help. Now the two of them must find a way to get Anna back into her body and stop Taylor from accusing an innocent friend of murder. Together Anna and Rei form a plan but it doesn't take into account the deeper feelings that are beginning to grow between them.

I absolutely LOVE the cover for Auracle! I try not to judge books by them, especially recently where I've come across WAY TOO many bad books with beautiful covers, but reading the summary gave me hope that this wasn't just a pretty face. This one could possibly be a ultra-rare GOOD book with a GORGEOUS cover.

ARC Review: Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock

Title: Hemlock (Hemlock # 1)
Author: Kathleen Peacock
Release Date: 08 May 2012
Pages: 400
Publisher: Katherine Tegan / HarperCollins
Source: Publisher
Status: On Tour
Pre-Order: Amazon | The Book Depository

Hemlock (Hemlock, #1)

I went into reading HEMLOCK not knowing what to expect. All I knew was that I didn't care much for novels with werewolves; in fact, I'd stopped reading them altogether after a particularly bad one about a year ago. I read the back and wondered if the author could pull off writing a story like this and still be able to make it unique and original. At first I had my doubts, but sooner than later I found myself completely engrossed in this book. What I find the most intriguing about this book is the characters. They all have their strengths and their weaknesses; none of them are perfect. I know firsthand how terrible it can be to deal with someone's death, especially a person who was very close to you. People have different ways of handling their grief. For Mac, Jason, and Kyle that's finding Amy's werewolf murderer.

In the world of HEMLOCK those who are infected with Lupine Syndrome are turned into lethal werewolves. When found, turned werewolves are sent away into a government run facility that no one has any clue what goes on in. Then in comes the Trackers; people who have dedicated their lives to finding hidden werewolves, hunting them down, and killing them. Mac has a bad feeling about these people, and for good reason. But for Jason this means a possible chance at avenging the death of his girlfriend who was killed by a werewolf; one that's still on the loose. Throughout the book Mac gradually begins to lose Jason to the trackers, and their intimidating leader.

The pacing of this book kept me on edge. There were times when I felt like punching Jason in the face. And then there were other times where I felt like hugging him. Kyle was a very sweet throughout the book, and I think he might be my second favorite character in the book. The ending and the way things left off between these three was cliff-hanger-rific! I was literally crushed when I got to the last page and realized there weren't any more pages left. Overall, HEMLOCK is a head-spinning novel that you don't want to miss! I highly recommend paranormal readers, especially those like me who had given up on the werewolf genre.

TRAILER: Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins

What if there were teens whose lives depended on being bad influences? This is life for sons and daughters of fallen angels in Sweet Evil...

Tenderhearted Southern girl, Anna Whitt, was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She’s aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but it isn’t until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage, and her will-power is put to the test. He’s the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

A cross-country trip to meet her father forces Anna to face the reality that hope and love are not options for her kind. When she confronts her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?
 ~ ~ ~
BELOW is the trailer of Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins to be released May 1st, 2012. This was my first time imagining Anna with a southern accent; when I imagined her talking in my head she didn't really have much of one.

If you read my review of Sweet Evil, you know how much I utterly adored this book!

☆ INTERVIEW: Kathleen Peacock author of HEMLOCK ☆

I had the great fortune of being able to read Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock, and I absolutely adored it. Here is an interview with the writer behind this incredible book, which is to be released May 8th by Katherine Tegan / Harper Collins books.

Me: When did you first get the idea for Hemlock?
Kathleen: I first had the idea several years ago. A scene of Mac, Jason, and Kyle popped into my head one morning while I was walking to work. I wasn’t writing at the time (I had given it up after high school), but when I did finally decide I wanted to try my hand at a novel, those were the characters I wanted to do it with.

Me: If you can choose to be any YA book character who would you be and why?
Kathleen: Probably Sophie from Hex Hall. I love how witty she is. Plus, she gets to kiss Archer Cross AND has Jenna (coolest vamp sidekick ever!) as a best friend.

Me: Where is your favorite place to read a book?  For me I read everywhere because I have to steal moments throughout my busy day, but if I could choose a favorite place it would probably be curled up on my bed.
Kathleen: I totally read almost everywhere. I always have a book with me to flip through in stolen snatches while waiting in line or for the bus. My favorite place to read is a tossup between my living room couch and this great little deli that has awesome sandwiches and terrific music.

Me: Did you always want to become an author? At what point did you say to yourself “I want to become a published writer?”
Kathleen: I have a very clear memory of saying I wanted to write and illustrate books when I was four or five, and it was a goal I had until my senior year of high school. I’m not sure what happened that year, but I got it into my head that I would never have any success at writing and ended up going to art school to study graphic design (because art was the only other thing I was passionate about).

It wasn’t until several years after college that I started writing again—first blogging, then short stories, and finally Hemlock.

Me: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Kathleen: Don’t do what I did. I look back on those years when I wasn’t writing and cringe. I don’t regret going to art school—it led to a successful career that I enjoyed and that paid the bills when I did start writing again—but I do sometimes think I would have continued to write (even while pursuing other things) if I’d had more confidence in myself.

Also, the importance of reading often and reading widely cannot be stressed enough. My high school didn’t offer a creative writing class while I was there, and I went to art school instead of university. I almost always have, however, read voraciously.
