Why Kody’s writing makes my inside hurt (in a good way)...

Upon hearing that Kody Keplinger was publishing another novel I was jumping with excitement and eagerly anticipating its release. What I love about Kody’s writing is how raw it is. How the characters emotions quickly become your own. How she doesn’t shy away from touchy subjects and writes in such detail that once you’re in you’re not coming back out, at least not for a long while. In one sitting I finished this book, completely engrossed and immediately after craving the release of the next book by Kody Keplinger.

Whitley is the product of abandonment and parental neglect. Although her mother is still around she is so caught up in her own misery that Whitley has quickly faded to the background. The divorce between her parents completely warped her childhood and the one escape that she can use to temporarily relieve her stress is what I like to call Party Girl Syndrome. Find a party. Grab the nearest bottle of alcohol and worry about the consequences later. When Whitley moves into her fathers and future step-mother’s house for the summer she never expected to see Nathan, a boy she hooked up with one night at a party who is trying to make up for his wild past. Nathan is sweet and everything you want in a male protagonist of a YA novel. He, his mom, and his little sister eventually become Whitley’s first real functional family.

What can you expect from A Midsummer’s Nightmare?

A quick entertaining read with an array of quirky fun dynamic characters, tons of laughs, family themes, and romance that’ll make your eyes go steamy. This is a character driven novel more than anything else.
What not to expect...
The reason why this is not a 5 star for me is because of how short this book felt to me. Like I mentioned before, this is a character driven novel. There were a lot less scenes than I thought there would be, and a lot less action. Maybe I feel this way because I read it so fast and the ending left me unhinged, or maybe it’s because I’m comparing it with the Duff. Although I did not love the plot as much as the Duff, I definitely fell in love with the characters just as easily.

  1. I love Kody Keplinger:) I loved Shut Out and The Duff and I always think all her characters are so incredible, I don't mind shorter stories or scenes.

    Great review:)
