Bookish News: All things "Divergent"

I know the cover to Allegiant  (3rd installment of the Divergent series) was released a month ago but I just saw it so of course now I have to gush over how amazing it is and how much I can't wait for it to be released!

US Cover
UK Cover
Is anyone else this excited? AHHH I am so pumped. My sister has read books 1 and 2 of the Divergent series which is amazing because she literally never reads anything more than like 50 pages. This is the one book we can both talk to each other about and that makes me *so* so happy!

Also this image was released like a month ago. It is a picture from the Divergent Movie. Haha! I had almost forgotten about this turning into a movie. This is so surreal. I wonder who was cast as who.

From the Divergent movie. Tris jumping off a building.
Update: Whoa! Tris is that girl from The Secret Life of the American Teenager. I watched all seasons of that show and I can not imagine this actor playing Tris at all. :/

Why I loved Divergent...
I think it’s best to start off this review with some of my thoughts on Divergent. Refreshingly different. Downright exhilarating. It was the most memorable novel I read that year amongst the hundred or so books I was also reading at the time. Reading Insurgent brought back my ardent feelings for Divergent but left me feeling a somewhat…dry in the aftermath. I realize that this is a sophomore novel and that most of the time they end up becoming filler spaces for the third book, but I was not expecting it to happen with Divergent. I guess I was expecting a little bit more…? That lack of that extra “something” is my reason for this being a 4 star.

Girl power at it's finest = Trice
Trice is the same firecracker she was in the first book. An impulsive risk-taker with her adrenaline where her brain should be half of the time. I enjoyed every bit of her risk-taking moments even though they were discouraged in the book. I know Trice is not supposed to be too impulsive, but after awhile I got tired of seeing female protagonists in YA novels being left out of fights for their protection. It’s way too common and I’m sick of it. If there’s an important battle/fight going on Trice is in it. I’m glad I do not have to read through some angst-filled monologue of how the protagonist wishes she was strong enough to go. Good for you Trice!

Divergent NEWS!

Okay this is going to be a short post today. I'll get straight to it.

Go here and watch:

There's a British boy who's acting out FOUR for Harper Collins UK. He actually talks to you in the first part and I nearly fell off my seat, Lol. Then later he just keeps on repeating "Come on, what are  you afraid of?" If you take the Fear Landscape test he says more things. It's really fun listening to him. Lol, now when I read Insurgent I'm going to imagine Four with an English accent.

The actor looks kind of familiar....but I can't tell where I've seen him before. Anyways, if you haven't seen it yet go watch it right now! I made the link extra large and clickable.  :)

Excerpt of INSURGENT by Veronica Roth!

The first exclusive look into the anticipated sequel to Divergent was released today on EW’s shelf life. Click here to read it. Also, check out the pulse-racing quotes posted so far on goodreads.

INSURGENT (Divergent, #2)
One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.
Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.
New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth's much-anticipated second book of the dystopian Divergent series is another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature.
What did you think of the excerpt? Are you looking forward to reading Insurgent this May?

On Writing: STORY STRUCTURE (Part 2)

The Eight–Point Structure applied to YA Dystopian novel DIVERGENT

*CAUTION-CONTAINS SPOILERS*

Stasis
Normal life of Beatrice/ introduces her society/ the problem

Trigger
Picking Dauntless

Quest
Going to Dauntless/ discovering what it is like to be Dauntless/ Meeting Four

Surprise
Finding out she is divergent/Getting beat up at practices/ Learning to fight/ eventually learns how to win a fight/ Finding out her mother is divergent

Critical choice
Chooses to fight back and win the contest to become a Dauntless

Climax
She's almost killed/ her mother dies/Four loses his mind/she finds out who the antagonist/ fights/witnesses many people dying

Reversal
Things are still bad. Even though her mother is dead she's still moving on. Reversal is basically how the character is like when everything is wrong because right after the climax things aren’t automatically get better.

Resolution
Enemy is deterred (for now), Trice and Four are safe, and she is not at all the same person she was in the beginning of the book. Sets up for the next book.

Question:
Do you ever notice the structure as you're reading a book? If not, try to look for the 8 points the next time you read a book so you have a good idea of how it's done. You can find these structure point in almost every novel you read.
